Top Artists' Popularity on Spotify and Success

Through different visualizations, this site is meant to analyze the top 10 most popular artists on the Spotify platform and determine how long it took them to achieve certain milestones in their music career, where they were able to do it, and how they were able to monetarily capitalize on their musical success.

Purpose:

Being a young, inexperienced musician can seem daunting. However, even the biggest artists all started from somewhere. Through visualization, we want to shed light on the complexities of how much time it took the most popular artists in the world to achieve their level of fame as well as how their financial success in music correlates or differs with their success in music.

Visualizations

As you can see, Bad Bunny, despite only spending 6 years on the platform, has the most all time streams. Additionally, he also has one of the largest bubbles meaning he has put more songs on Spotify than most of the other artists on this list. Bad Bunny, however, is an outlier. The general trend is that the longer you spend on the platform, the more streams you get.

As you can see from the chart, Drake has the most number 1 songs in the US and Canada. Bad Bunny has the most number 1 songs in Mexico. This discovery really showed us how even within the scope of the global top 10 music artists, there is lots of variation from country to country.

While previous trends have shown a positive correlation between popularity on the platform and time spent on the platform, when it comes to artist income, the trend appears to be much more vague. Despite having nearly twice as many monthly listeners as Post Malone, The Weeknd lags behind him in monthly salary by roughly $2m, with Drake also pulling in about $1m more per month than The Weeknd as well with 13 million less monthly listeners. The wild variations in monthly income in contrast to the relatively smooth correlation seen with the first graph is likely a result of a greater number of sources of revenue, like endorsement deals and tour sales, being available to artists that have had time to establish their presence in the public eye.

When looking at each artist's most popular song in terms of all-time streams on Spotify, a clear trend begins to emerge that suggests that the longer a song has been on the platform, the more listens it will have garnered in comparison to its younger counterparts. This is not to say that there are outliers to the rule, as both "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd and "Stay" by Justin Bieber each have significantly more streams than songs that are similar to them in the time since their release. As for the time each song was able to hold the #1 spot on Spotify's charts, a trend is much more difficult to determine in terms of longevity, yet when viewing each of the songs in terms of their all time streams, the ones with more streams tended to hold that #1 spot for more days than their less popular competition.

Different music artists have different journeys to the top of the charts, with some able to make it virtually overnight while others struggle on for years before eventually landing a hit at #1 in a country. For artists Post Malone and Bad Bunny, their rises to musical fame occurred in under 1000 days respectively, while every other artist on the list was not able to secure a #1 hit until well after 1500 days on the platform. Ed Sheeran in particular did not find a song of his at #1 in a country until close to 3000 days spent on the platform.

As an artist gets older and continues to accumulate wealth and assets as a result of their musical fame and the opportunities it gives them, so too can their net worth be expected to increase. One would then be in the right frame of mind to determine if a correlation between age and net worth exists among the top ten most popular artists on Spotify. In reality, such a correlation does not appear to exist to such an extent, as net worths fluctuate massively along the age spectrum of the artists, a reality that likely stems more from each artist's time spent as a well known public figure rather than based purely on age.
